The IEEE Guide for Safety in AC Substation Grounding, IEEE Std. 80-2000, describes equations that can be used for calculating step and touch potentials over a ground grid.

KWIKGRID is far more flexible and accurate in modeling ground electrodes than these equations. The equations in the 2000 edition are limited to rectangular ground grids with even spacing of the grid conductors, located in uniform soil. As KWIKGRID uses a more general method that is suitable for any configuration of conductors and for non-uniform soil, it cannot be said to comply with the IEEE method of calculation. It is really a considerable improvement on the IEEE equations and will determine more accurately, whether step and touch potentials are within the tolerable limits defined by the IEEE.
