Sample Input Data File

The following is a plot of a ground electrode model of a pulp mill. Each of the buildings has been modeled as a grid of conductors to represent the conductive foundations. The main substation can be seen at the bottom of the figure. It has a number of ground rods that are shown by small green circles. When the software is used, the plots appear  more clearly and can be printed on any PC compatible printer. Text at the bottom left gives information about the file name etc. The plot can be rotated and viewed isometrically.

The following listing is the data file required to develop this model. It illustrates some of the features of the ac version of the program.

  • Lines starting with an asterisk * are comment lines that are ignored by the program.

  • The keyword "soil" is followed by the resistivity of the top and deep layers in ohm-metres and the depth of the top layer in metres. Units of feet can also be used.

  • The data is arranged in blocks for each electrode, starting with the keyword "electrode". Each "electrode" has a descriptive name. The substation electrode has a complex fault current injected. The format of the data in the "electrode" blocks is the x, y and z co-ordinates of the start of the conductor, x, y, and z co-ordinates of the end, the radius and subdivision requirement. All are in metres or feet as selected, except that the subdivision is an integer number that specifies how many pieces the conductor should be subdivided into before calculations start. In this model all conductor have the subdivision set to 1, so will not be subdivided.

There are a number of bond impedances near the end of the listing, starting with the word "impedance". These are specified as being connected between the numbered electrodes so that the line:

8 24 0.006112 0.03117

means there is an impedance of 0.006112 + j0.03117 ohms between electrodes No. 8 and No. 24. The listing ends with the keyword "end".

To have the program calculate soil potentials for plotting contours, one has only to add the keyword "area" followed by a line giving the co-ordinates of a corner of the area, the width and number of points across.
